STYLE 13
Lines
A design grid is an invisible series of lines
used as the framework of a layout (see
Step 9.6). This style uses grid-like lines as
the foundation of the design itself. They
are not only decorative; they form spaces
for each information element.
This bright, fresh-looking
photograph makes a great non-logo
logo. The life jacket is a symbol of water
and also promotes water safety. But the
reason it works well is because its an
unexpected solution.

What you need
Editing photographic images requires a paint or
digital imaging program such as Adobe Photoshop or
Jasc Software’s Paint Shop Pro. Simple text, lines, and
shapes can be produced with a desktop publishing
program such as Adobe InDesign, Adobe PageMaker,
QuarkXPress, or Microsoft Publisher.
The grid is slightly taller than it is wide to
better accommodate the photograph. Adjust
yours to match the shape of your visual.
A line pattern is used to decorate the front and
back of the business card. The kind of simple
change that makes each piece—letterhead,
business card, and envelope—unique.
A slight shadow is added to the life jacket to
raise it off the page.
A bold typeface is used to emphasize the
importance of the defining phrase.
The type in all the cells is equidistant from the
corner—at least one whole letterspace away.
Space is added between lines of type to make
the paragraph fit the space top to bottom.
