Transmission media evolved rapidly when the AT&T divesture occurred. This was due mainly to the fact that the telephone company no longer was responsible for the inside wiring in a home or building. This event created the business need for an organization to install its own structured wiring system.

The need for high-speed network connectivity helped drive the advancement of structured wiring systems. As Ethernet-based LAN technologies evolved with higher speeds, so did the unshielded twisted-pair transmission media that supports them.
