This chapter presented a methodology for performing troubleshooting. You learned how the process of elimination helps with troubleshooting. Following the OSI model from the bottom to the top is exactly how troubleshooting should be performed. In an IP data network, we are most concerned about Physical Layer 1, Data Link Layer 2, and Network Layer 3. First, you must have link integrity. Second, you must be able to transmit and receive Ethernet frames. Third, you should be able to successfully perform a ping from source to destination IP host device.
