POWER OF ATTORNEY
All importers should properly manage the number of
customs brokers that are conducting customs business on
their behalf. It is imperative that proper control be estab-
lished and maintained to ensure that qualified persons are
presenting all declarations.
Many importers do not realize that the power of attorney
is established for the protection of the importer of record to
control brokers who conduct customs business on the im-
porter’s behalf. There is a rule that a customs broker, who is
authorized to conduct customs business on behalf of an im-
porter, must have a valid power of attorney to conduct such
business or face a penalty of up to the value of the mer-
chandise or loss of license.
