The IBM z900 server’s Symmetrical MultiProcessor (SMP) design uses a subsystem
interconnection that is an extension of the IBM 9672 G5/G6 server’s BiNodal Cache
Architecture. This system “nest” structure uses separate connections for address, data, and
to control memory fetches. An Elastic Interface (EI) to memory and within memory has been
added for bandwidth.
All z900 server models have two processor clusters. Each cluster has 6 or 10 Processing
Units (PUs), the Storage Control Element (SCE) with associated cache Level 2, local main
memory and Memory Bus Adapters (MBAs).
