IC-3 channel paths can be used to connect a Coupling Facility LPAR (using definition type
ICP) to an ESA/390 LPAR (using definition type ICP) on the same CPC. The z/Architecture or
ESA/390 architecture LPARs using ICP can also use CFP, CBP, and/or CBS-defined channels
at the same time to connect to Coupling Facility LPARs on another server.
On earlier generation servers, ISC or ICB channels could be used to connect a Coupling
Facility LPAR to an ESA/390 LPAR on the same server. This was referred to as
Self Coupled.
This is still possible on the z900 server, but is not recommended. We recommend using IC-3
Coupling channels when connecting a Coupling Facility LPAR to other operating system
LPARs on ...
