Introduction
In Exchange 2013 SP1 (CU4), the Edge Transport was reintroduced and it remains present in Exchange 2016. But, unlike Exchange 2013, there are now only two server roles- Edge Transport servers and Mailbox servers. This means the Mailbox server role now includes both the client access services that accept client connections for all protocols, as well as the transport services that are used to route email.
In addition to routing messages, you can apply rules, configure settings, and enforce limits on messages as they pass through the servers in your environment.
