Once a retention policy is set on a mailbox, the retention settings defined by the policy's retention tags will be applied to each mailbox by the Managed Folder Assistant (MFA). MFA is a service that runs on each mailbox server and, by default, it is set to process every mailbox on the server within one day. It is throttle-based, which means that the tasks will be running all the time and it will do its work only when there are resources available. Having said that, it is possible to force the Managed Folder Assistant to run immediately, but keep in mind that it could impact the performance of the mailbox server.
To force MFA to process a particular mailbox, use the Start-ManagedFolderAssistant cmdlet:
