It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
Summary
Configuring the SQL Server network components correctly is an essential step in ensuring that users and applications are able to connect to the SQL Server database reliably and realize good performance.
SQL Server 2005 introduces several changes to the network components by way of new tools and libraries as well as configuration management. In this chapter we took an in-depth look at some of these, like SQL Server Configuration Manager and SQL Native Client, and the applicability of these to particular usage scenarios. We also took a look at the procedure to create ODBC DSNs, configuring network protocols as well as analyzing and troubleshooting network performance.
