Summary

LDAP is not only the main protocol used by the Active Directory, but it is also a standard being adopted by many other directory providers. For example, the Netscape Directory Server uses LDAP. As more clients are coded to use LDAP, you can expect to see this protocol popping up everywhere. Although not as complicated as the protocols it was designed to replace, LDAP is not a simple protocol. I encourage you to review the relevant RFCs if you have an interest in learning about some of the complexities of the protocol described in this chapter.
