The Certificate Services

Windows 2000 and Windows NT have a service called the Microsoft certificate server (MCS). It serves as the core of their certificate services.

I first explain how Microsoft certificate services work. Then I show how to install and administer the certificate server. I also go over how it is used with respect to Microsoft's certificate services architecture.

How It Works

The core of the certificate services is Microsoft's certificate server. The server fulfills all the primary duties of a CA. It can issue, renew, and revoke X.509v3 certificates for users. It can also be chained to other CAs to implement a public-key infrastructure.
