WINS (Windows Internet Name Service) and Windows 2000

If you have spent any time working in the Windows NT Server 4 world, you are undoubtedly aware of how difficult it can be to set up and maintain a WINS infrastructure. Some would say that WINS is a synonym for "difficult to maintain." You might even be wondering why I'm even discussing WINS, given the fact that DNS is the basis for Windows 2000 naming. Well, the good news is that with Windows 2000, WINS is for "backward compatibility only." Windows 2000 Server running in native mode knows nothing about WINS. Dynamic DNS provides the functionality that WINS had been providing for Microsoft networking clients: resolving names into addresses.
