Introduction

My goal in writing this text is to fill a void. In my years as both a developer and a network security professional, I have seen a great lack of complete, thorough, and accurate information available about Windows NT and Windows 2000. There are many reasons behind this void: the newness of the operating systems themselves, the commercial (closed source) nature of Microsoft, and the proliferation of systems being developed and administered by relatively non-technical staff who don't really care about the details. These, among other things, have led to a frightening lack of thorough and accurate information in numerous areas—not the least of which is security.
