For end-to-end communication, any node is required to resolve the 48-bit Ethernet MAC address associated to the layer 3 IPv4 or IPv6 network address.
When the layer 3 network is IPv4, ARP is used to resolve the MAC address associated with the IPv4 address. The ARP packet format is as follows:
