It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
How it works...
In order to validate the reachability between PC1 and PC3, the Ping utility tool will be used to trigger ICMP messages from PC1 to PC3 as shown in the following diagram:
An ICMP echo request (type 8) will be generated with the source address as 10.1.100.101 destined to 10.1.200.101 and forwarded to the default gateway. Each router along the path will forward it based on the forwarding table. PC3, upon receiving the ICMP echo request message, will reply with an ICMP echo reply (type 0) to figure. Ping failure will indicate a connectivity issue between PC1 and PC3.
