While the forwarding semantic associated with the IP header allows any transit node to fragment the packet, it may create performance issues (as mentioned in the previous section) as the receiver is required to re-assemble the packets before processing. We could force the transit node to not fragment the packet but instead signal the presence of a lower MTU in the path and let the originator adjust the MSS. This process is known as Path MTU Discovery (PMTUD) and is an efficient way of detecting the lowest MTU along the path and using the value to adjust the MSS for efficient data transmission.
