Over the past several years, Oracle has evolved to better automate, control, and manage backup and recovery tasks. In Oracle8, the component to accomplish this is the Recovery Manager (RMAN). Its equivalent in Oracle7 is the Enterprise Backup Utility (EBU).
The conceptual architectures of RMAN and EBU are extremely similar. Backup and recovery operations at sites that use them often appear to be similar as well. But, ultimately, the two are different, incompatible products. RMAN exclusively manages Oracle8 databases, while EBU covers only Oracle7 databases from release 7.1.6 onward. The backups taken by one component may not be utilized by the other.
