A family of sliding contacts (or brushes) lies along
a radius with one contact being allocated to each ring. As
the disk rotates below the group of fixed contacts, the
latter will pick off a pattern of binary ones and zeros
which represents the aerial angle and which can be read
into memory as a bearing word. It should be noticed
that the number of unique words which can be pro-
duced by the encoder is equal to the number of segments
in the outer ring, i.e. the ring which generates the LSB.
