
7 Radar plotting
7.1 Introduction
It may be argued that the prime function of the radar
system is avoidance of collision, either with other vessels
or with navigation marks in restricted visibility. After
the initial euphoria of being able to detect other vessels
in fog, the plethora of accidents involving vessels equip-
ped with radar left no doubt as to the need for systematic
observation of the radar display and for proper tech-
niques for the extraction of data relating to other vessels.
