It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.

4.5.8 The use of the marker for range
and bearing measurement
Provisions should be made to obtain quickly the
range and bearing of any object which appears on the
ARPA display.
To comply with this requirement, most manufacturers
have enabled the range and bearing of the screen-
controlled marker to be displayed. In this way, the range
and bearing of an object can be obtained by placing the
marker over it. Like all range and bearing measuring
devices, they should be regularly checked against the
range rings and heading marker respectively (see also
Sections 6.9.8 and 6.9.9).
