It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
Bottom-Up Estimation
Bottom-up estimation is a fairly popular approach and is known by many different names including module build-up, by-engineering procedures, top-down, decomposition, and several others. Developing cash-flow streams using a work breakdown structure (WBS), as described in Chapter 3 and Appendix A, is an application of this estimation technique.
Let's step back in time at the library automation company, to when the first RFP was received. Suppose that the CEO didn't quite trust the expert judgment estimate and wanted to have an estimate that she could have more confidence in. In this case, it could be worthwhile to break the proposed system down into the individual components and then sum up estimates of the costs of those components. ...
