17.10 | Sandy Bridge and IvyBridge
The second generation of the Core (i3, i5 and i7) processors is based on the Sandy
Bridge microarchitecture, which was released in 2011. What Sandy Bridge has to
offer as enhancements are the integration into the chip of the ‘graphics control-
ler’ and PCIe (PCI Express) controller. In 2012, a smaller die version of the Sandy
Bridge was released and it was named ‘IvyBridge’. This is the ‘third generation’ Core
processor.
