A model that classifies inventions based on complexity, nonobviousness, and impact.
The levels of invention model is the centerpiece of an invention methodology referred to as TRIZ, a Russian acronym that translates to Theory of Inventive Problem Solving. The model is the product of a systematic review of 200,000 patent abstracts, from which 40,000 exemplars were selected, and from which five categories of inventions were derived. The levels of invention are ranked based on their ability to eliminate performance tradeoffs.1
