Universal structures and resulting patterns of behavior found across system types.
System archetypes are cause-effect structures that exist across a wide range of systems and yield similar patterns of behavior. For example, the system structure that enables a thermostat to maintain a specified room temperature is basically the same as the system structure that maintains the population of a species. The details of the systems are unique, but the cause-effect structures and resulting system behaviors are comparable.1
It is unknown how many system archetypes exist, but the following seven are common to many systems:
