A triangular relationship between facial features that creates the illusion of sentience.
The magic triangle is a triangular relationship between the eyes, nose, and mouth, developed by Don Sahlin, chief designer of the Muppets. Eye placement is considered the most important aspect of the magic triangle: Pupils are slightly crossed, staring toward the tip of the nose. This makes it appear that muppets are staring at a point in space about 18 to 24 inches (45.7 to 61 cm) in front of their faces, creating the appearance of intentional focus — like the character is looking at something specific versus staring into space. This helps bring muppets to life and makes them appear sentient.1
