Monitoring search engines is similar to monitoring news sites. Use Google Alert (http://www.googlealert.com) to set up monitoring queries after you've tested them in Google. When I'm monitoring for new sites I use the special syntaxes a lot. For butterflies I might try:
intitle:butterfly archive
intitle:butterfly encyclopedia
butterfly butterflies -"madame butterfly"
The archive and encyclopedia keywords are to slant the results toward more content-dense pages. You don't want to merely get alerts of all pages added or respidered by Google containing “butterfly” or any other common words. It's too much. You'd drown. If you have a more unusual word or phrase, perhaps you can just monitor for that. Check and see what kind of results ...
