While there are ways that you can do kid-safer searching on full-text search engines, I recommend that you use kid-safe searchable subject indexes and subject guides—those that have been established by humans and that have pages added to them by humans. Though these kinds of sites aren't foolproof either (an expiring domain might be bought by an adult-oriented site, a page might get hijacked, etc.), they tend to be much-reviewed and a pretty safe place for kids to go. My personal favorite is Yahooligans.
