Long ago when the Internet was a lot simpler, there was a simple trick to finding official state Web sites. You simply used the URL:
http://www.state.xx.us

What's .gov? It's the top-level domain for government Web sites. In a way it's more authoritative than the .us domain—while the .us domain was once restricted to U.S. entities, nowadays anybody can register a .us domain. The .gov domain is restricted to government entities only and thus has some “instant credibility” that the .us domain no longer has.
where xx was the two-letter abbreviation of the state in which you were interested—CA for California, for example. And for the most part that trick still works; http://www.state.ar.us still gets you the official state of Arkansas ...
