A method used to resolve names to IP addresses. On the Internet, this is done with DNS. On internal networks, it can be done with DNS, WINS, the Hosts file, the LMHosts file, the host cache, the NetBIOS cache, and broadcasts.
A name used to identify systems on a Windows network. A NetBIOS name is composed of 15 readable characters, with the 16th byte identifying a service running on the system. The use of NetBIOS names has been significantly reduced in networks in favor of hostnames, but they are still being used by older applications. NetBIOS names are not supported in IPv6.
