Glossary

@mention: A Twitter update that includes @username within the tweet. See also @reply.

@reply: Pronounced at reply. A Twitter update that begins with @username, which identifies a tweet as being directed at a specific Twitter user. See also @mention.

archive: The location on a blog where posts that are not current are stored for easy access by visitors.

Atom: A type of syndication format used to deliver feeds. See also feed, feed reader, and RSS.

attribution: Citing the source of a story, quote, or image used within online content.

avatar: An online identity’s visual representation, such as a picture of a person or logo of a company.

bandwidth: The amount of data that can be transmitted through a network, modem, or online connection, typically measured in bits per second (bps).

blog: A fusion of the words Web and log. Originally dubbed Weblogs, blog quickly grew to be the preferred nomenclature. Blogs began as online diaries with entries listed in reverse chronological order. As blogging grew in popularity, individuals, groups, and businesses joined the blogosphere. Blogs are unique in that they provide a two-way conversation between the author and visitors through the comment feature. Blogs are considered one of the first methods of bringing user-generated content to the mainstream.
