On January 9, 2020, the World Health Organization announced that a novel strain of coronavirus had been identified in a hospitalized patient with pneumonia in Wuhan, China.[5] By February 2, travel restrictions began as the recorded fatalities from the novel coronavirus, now known as COVID-19, surpassed those seen in the entire 2002 SARS pandemic.
By March, governments worldwide had declared national health emergencies with cases and hospitalizations rising rapidly across the world. In unprecedented measures, many countries forced all nonessential workers to stay at home in lockdown.
