Flight Mode

AIRLINES BAN THE USE of cellphone signals during flights. But they don’t actually ban the use of cellphones themselves. So you can still use your Galaxy S II to run apps, play games, and so on, as long as its radios aren’t turned on.

That’s where Flight mode comes in. It turns off all your Galaxy S II’s radios but lets you use your cellphone for everything else.

You might also want to use Flight mode even when you’re not in flight in order to save power.

There are two ways to turn on Flight mode:

  • Use the Power Control widget. Slide over to the Power Control widget from the Home screen—head to the last pane to the right (Settings Pane). Then tap its leftmost icon—the one that looks like an airplane. It turns orange and switches off all of the Galaxy S II’s radios. You can also get to the Power Control widget by dragging down the Notification Panel.

  • Use “Wireless and network settings.” From your Home screen or any pane, press the Menu key, tap Settings→“Wireless and network,” and then select Flight mode. A green checkmark appears to show that you’ve turned it on. To turn it off, tap it again.

Tip

An increasing number of airplanes have Wi-Fi connections. If you want to connect your Galaxy S II to the plane’s Wi-Fi network, turn on Flight mode, and then turn on Wi-Fi and make a connection as you would normally. In that way, you’ve turned off all the Galaxy S II’s radios except ...
