Use a Tablet and Calibrator
I recommend using a Wacom tablet for postprocessing work because the top image editors, such as Lightroom and Photoshop, integrate nicely with the pen pressure of the tablet. That makes it easier to perform dodging, burning, and other local adjustments. The harder you push, the more the effect is visible. Or, depending on the task, the harder you push, the larger the brush.
I also recommend using a monitor calibration system for the most accurate color. As a colorblind photographer, I use the ColorMunki system from X-Rite. Between that and accurate white balance in-camera, I can get as close to perfect color—or my desired color—without worrying that I am choosing incorrectly.
