Microsoft has been focusing on making D365FO more and more user friendly to apply new updates. Microsoft has put out a release cadence process that provides customers/partners with much-needed advance notice to prepare for new updates.

Service updates are continuous, automatic updates that provide new features and functionality. They maintain backward compatibility, which means there is no need to merge your code. 

The customer/partner is in control to decide when to get these updates. You are in control and manage how your organization receives these updates.
