314 Inverting the Paradox of Excellence
Long-term, fuel cells are considered to be the next revolution in automotive power trains. Fuel
cell is an electrochemical device that combines hydrogen and oxygen to produce electricity (with
water and heat as its by-product). Fuel cell vehicles (FCVs) are propelled by electric motors, but
unlike battery-electric vehicles that use stored electric energy, FVCs create their own. They can be
fuelled by pure hydrogen gas stored on board in high-pressure tanks or by hydrogen-rich fuels such
as methanol, a natural gas.
