Punycode
Most English-speaking web users are unaware that there are many alphabets that are used in the DNS around the world. While English, Germanic, and Romance language keyboards maybe unaware of this, browsers are fully capable of rendering these characters to accommodate users and companies that leverage the much wider alphabets from Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. The compromise was to implement an encoding scheme so that browsers and other applications can refer to the other characters accurately, and this was called Punycode. This does cause some confusion, as there are letters or symbols in different languages that are distinct despite looking almost identical.
