Our payload, upon executing, needs to have something to talk to, in case it gets lonely or unruly. In Metasploit, that function is provided by a handler. We can simply create a handler for the type of payload we deliver, and in doing so, ensure that when we gain access to a system, we are there and able to take advantage of it when it happens. Handlers act as our command and control (C2 or C&C) connection to the target, and present us with the shell environment that we can use to manipulate the target with impunity (as shown in following screenshot):
