Summary
The Synchronous Optical Network or SONET/SDH forms the backbone of many service provider and carrier networks. SONET/SDH is used as a Layer 1.5 TDM transport mechanism for voice and data. Legacy SONET/SDH networks use add/drop multiplexers (ADMs) that add or drop OC-N or STM-N circuits between ADM nodes on the ring. MSPPs integrate ADM, DACS, and Ethernet switching functionality within the device. The MSPP can provide private line TDM services, ATM services, 10/100/1000-Mbps Ethernet services, and Multiprotocol Label Switched (MPLS) IP-routed services.
