The massive growth of the Internet has fueled technologies that can scale rapidly upwardly in terms of bandwidth. Optical networking and DWDM provide fiber relief without the high infrastructure costs associated with deploying new fiber plants. From a base technology perspective, many carriers and service providers have a huge SONET and SDH installed base that is currently used to deliver TDM voice.
