Ethernet services are ubiquitous in nature and could someday replace ATM as the technology of choice, thereby changing the utopian adage of “ATM everywhere” to “Ethernet everywhere.” IPv4 and/or IPv6 would obviously ride on Ethernet fulfilling the requirement as a routable protocol that could provide corporate intranet connectivity as well as full compatibility with the public Internet.
