The term OC-N refers to the optical carrier SONET transmission characteristics of an Nth level transmission link, whereas STS-N refers to the electrical SONET transmission characteristics of an Nth level transmission link where 1 <= N <= 768. SONET frames are created, multiplexed, demultiplexed, and managed electrically. As shown in Figure 5-2, user data is sent to the STS-1 multiplexing device that adds the path overhead (POH) to create the SPE.
