In 1999, Cisco took a major step forward in its entry into the optical market with the acquisition of Cerent Corporation, a pioneer and innovator of next-generation multiservice provisioning platforms (MSPPs). This began the optical revolution rendering legacy SONET and SDH systems a thing of the past by bringing advanced packet techniques to a traditional circuit- and voice-based network. The Cisco optical family has changed the way enterprises and service providers deliver services by combining familiar enterprise Ethernet networking technologies with optical transports and converging traditional voice, data, and video applications.
