SONET topologies center around survivability of the network with 50 ms or lower rapid recovery. Various topologies can be configured using either ADMs or DCSs. It is interesting to note that SONET ring topologies are often used in North America, whereas Europe, Asia, and Latin America mainly rely on SDH-based ring as well as meshed network topologies. Protection switching is mainly performed by the intelligent ADMs or DCSs.
