Network Design Strategies
Carriers and service providers have traditionally used various strategies in designing networks. Some of the key business parameters that drive optical network design include the following:
Low capital expenditure (CAPEX)
Low operating expenditure (OPEX)
Low total cost of ownership (TCO)
Rapid return on investment (ROI)
Networks can be engineered to guarantee a low TCO in the way they are built and operated. TCO can be defined as a sum of CAPEX and OPEX. Some operators prefer the minimum CAPEX model versus the minimum TCO model.
