SUMMARY
An understanding of device drivers is a key to comprehending the requirements for development of a customized embedded operating system such as Windows Embedded Compact 7. A device driver interfaces between the hardware and the operating system and provides an application programming interface for its configuration, status reads, I/O reads and writes, and an interrupt mechanism if required. You can select out-of-the-box Compact 7 drivers from the Catalog or use third-party device drivers and custom device drivers.
