BEST PRACTICE TO SAVE TIME AND MINIMIZE PROBLEMS

It’s a simple task to launch the command to build an OS design from the Platform Builder IDE; just select and click a command. However, this single-click has the following cost in terms of time:

  • Depending on the development station’s performance, it takes anywhere from 10 to more than 20 minutes to build an OS design project to generate an OS run-time image.
  • After an OS run-time image is generated, you and your team need to spend time to run tests and debug the image to see whether the OS image contains all the required components and is properly configured to meet the design specification, which may take hours, days, or even weeks.

It’s a good practice to check and validate updates to the OS design to ensure the required features are included and changes to the project are as intended and properly implemented before releasing the OS image to the next development step.

Understand the Build Process

A typical Compact 7 OS design project includes hundreds of modules with multiple configuration files; it’s not realistic to go through all files trying to debug and identify problems. With a good understanding about the build process and results generated by each build step, you are better equipped to identify build problems.

Table 11-3 lists some of the common problems related to building the OS design.
