Using change sets is the most common and easiest way to deploy metadata from a sandbox to another sandbox or your production environment. It's important to note that the orgs need to be connected to each other; that's why I specifically say from a sandbox to another sandbox or production! You can't use change sets to deploy data from a developer org to another developer org, because those aren't and can't be connected to each other.
A change set is a little container, a package, containing the components you created or modified in your sandbox that you would like to deploy to your production after it has been carefully tested.
