It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
SOSL
You have probably found the global search functionality of Salesforce. Search for a criteria in every object and in each field. That's the greatest use case to use SOSL instead of SOQL. You can use this powerful search functionality in your application, as well.
The definition of SOSL is slightly different from the SOQL definition.
