So when I got on to O'Reilly, I was like a kid in a candy store. There are playlists. There are answers. There's on-demand training. It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.

The method or variable is visible to any inner classes in the Apex class itself and to the classes that extend the Apex class, where you define your variable or method. You can only use the protected access modifier for methods and variables, not for classes.
