BEHIND THE SCENES: Our subject is a US Army rescue helicopter pilot, and we’re shooting at the Army airfield, out on the ramp, on a hot summer’s day. We’re using a large scrim to diffuse the sun, giving us a softer, better quality of light. This is a much larger version of a 1-stop diffuser (see page 63). This one is made by British company Lastolite, and it’s supported by two light stands (note the sandbags on each of the stands to keep this rig from flying away and damaging some expensive copters). On top of each light stand is a rotating head that lets us tip the scrim in the direction of the sun ...
